| St. Peter's Nursery Preschool Parents Handbook
School Calendar and Emergency Closings
The nursery preschool educational program is unique. It is during these years that first impressions and attitudes toward school and learning are formed. The St. Peter's Nursery Preschool program incorporates play and learning to ensure many opportunities.
The program incorporates free play, creative and instructional projects, physical education (in the gym or on the playground), circle time, clean-up time, snack time, direct instruction, story time and music time. Each program is age appropriate for the greatest learning and growth. On special days there will be variations in the program including chapel, special visitors and holidays. Appropriate field trips are taken in the community for 3 and 4-year-old classes.
St. Peter's Nursery Preschool is certified in Suffolk County and is a member of the Lutheran Early Childhood Association. The New York State Department of Education certifies St. Peter's. All teachers are also certified by New York State. St. Peter's Nursery Preschool meets all staffing, program, and health and safety requirements of New York State.
A child must be two, three, or four years old by December 1 (December 31 in school districts #5 and #6). St. Peter's Nursery Preschool admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.
The teacher arranges classroom visitations for the child and parents prior to the opening of school. A probation period of one month at the beginning of the school year precedes the final acceptance of each child. Three and four-year-old children must be toilet-trained before the start of school in September. Three-year-olds who are almost toilet trained, may wear pull-ups when the parent signs a Transition Agreement.
CONTACTING THE NURSERY PRESCHOOL All nursery preschool related telephone calls should be made to the school telephone number (423-9523). Once school is in session, all phone calls to the school should be made between the hours of 9:00am to 1:00pm, during which time someone is in the office to answer the phone. An answering machine will record incoming telephone calls received at other times, and we will return your calls promptly.
SCHOOL CALENDAR AND EMERGENCY CLOSINGS St. Peter's Nursery Preschool follows South Huntington School District's decisions on school closings due to inclement weather. Therefore, if South Huntington School District is closed, then St. Peter's is also closed.
South Huntington School District will announce school closings on radio and TV. The stations are:
WALK 97.5 FM WBAB 102.3 FM Channel 12 News (website: News12.com) South Huntington's website: http://shuntington.k12.ny.us/
St Peter's Nursery Preschool will try to notify: WBAB 102.3 FM WBLI 106.1 FM Channel 12 news
If South Huntington School District has a delayed opening, then St. Peter's will have NO AM classes. However, a later decision will be made on the PM classes. The teachers will call to inform to PM parents if the school is still closed or will be open.
The message on the answering machine at the nursery preschool office (423-9523) will also give the information on the school closing.
Every child is required to have a medical examination. According to the New York State Department of Education, the school requires each child in the 3 and 4-year-old programs to have a medical and dental examination dated between April 1st but before September 1st. The children in the 2-year-old program are required to have a medical. Parents must submit forms for both medical and dental visits, which MUST include the doctor or dentist's signature and the date of the examination. These two forms are to be completed by the child's doctor and handed in by the first class in September for the child to enter school. Certain immunizations as mandated by New York State are required for admission to school. Required immunizations are listed on the school health form. REMINDER: A child will NOT be permitted to enter school if the school heath and dental forms signed by the doctor or dentist is not handed in by the first class. No medication will be administered to children by St. Peter's Nursery Preschool staff.
At times a child may become ill during the school day. It is important for parents to provide on the registration form the name and telephone number of another person who can be contacted in the event of an illness. Parents should not permit children to attend school too quickly after an illness or when the child does not feel well in the morning. If there is any doubt about a child's health, he/she should not be sent to school.
A child who contracts an illness that is considered contagious should not be sent to school until the family physician advises that it is safe for the child to return.
Examples include chicken pox, strep throat, scarlet fever, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). It is important for parents to inform the teacher promptly if a child has such an illness. Parents of other children in the class may be notified that their child has been exposed to a particular illness.
Many children today have allergies. Please let your child's teacher know if your child has allergies to food, milk, or has any other allergy that the teacher should be aware of for your child's good health. The nursery school is a Nut Aware School due to nut allergies. Please follow this guideline: 1. NO nuts 2. NO nuts in cookies 3. NO peanut butter cookies 4. NO snacks made with peanut oil
If a child bites three times in one school year, the general rule is for the child to be withdrawn from school. The director in consultation with the teachers will make the final determination if the child is to be removed.
Tuition is charged on an annual basis. Payments may be made annually, semi-annually, quarterly or monthly. Tuition payments are due on the first day of each month. Any payments received after the last day of the month will be subject to a late fee. The initial payment, due September 1st, includes tuition for both September and June. A Financial Agreement is to be signed when registering. There is an annual non-refundable registration fee.
A choice of morning or afternoon sessions is available. The morning session meets from 9:30am to 12 noon. The afternoon session meets from 12:30 PM to 3:00PM. Please be prompt for arrival and dismissal times.
The New York State Department of Education regulates the maximum enrollment and the child/teacher ratio.
Parents are responsible for their own child's transportation to and from school. If someone other than the parent is to pick up a child after school, teachers must be notified in advance and child release forms must be completed. Parents must bring the children to the classroom.
Children will attend chapel once a month, usually led by one of the pastors at St. Peter's. Special chapel services for all students, their families and friends are held for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
As part of the St. Peter's Nursery Preschool program, there are prayers at snack time. Also, children learn wonderful songs of faith, such as "Jesus Loves Me" and "This Little Light of Mine." During the course of the school year, the children learn about God's love, Jesus' birth, death and resurrection.
If families are in need of pastoral care, all are invited to call on our parish pastors. If you do not already have a church home, we invite you to consider St. Peter's. Our congregation worships Saturday evenings at 5:30 PM in the Good Shepherd Chapel and Sunday mornings at 9:15 AM and 11:00 AM in the Church. The Sunday school session is conducted during the 9:15 AM Sunday morning worship service.
Children are invited to enroll for a one-week Vacation Bible School during the summer. Call the church office for information at: (631) 423-1013
St. Peter's Nursery Preschool offers the children a varied educational and social curriculum. This curriculum includes:
St. Peter's Nursery Preschool also includes the parents. There are monthly class newsletters, visitation week in class before school starts, classroom visitations, teacher/parent conferences and special church and class presentations. There is also a St. Peter's Parenting Newsletter designed especially for parents.
The St. Peter's Nursery Preschool provides the milk for daily snack time. Parents are asked to provide the class snack. The snack can be cookies, pretzels, crackers or other healthy snacks. The classroom teacher will inform the parents when they are to provide the daily snack. Special birthday snacks may also be provided when the teacher requests them. Please follow guidelines on Nut Awareness.
In the event that you wish to have an out of school birthday party, please mail all invitations directly to those invited. NO invitations are to be handed out in school.
Children are not permitted to leave their classroom without a teacher or assistant. Once a parent picks up a child at the classroom, the parent becomes immediately responsible for that child.
Fire drills are practiced regularly. Emergency evacuations are also practiced.
The facilities include an indoor gymnasium for recreation in bad weather, and also a fenced in playground for outdoor activities. Sneakers or rubber-soled shoes are a must for your child's safety both in the gym and on the playground.
It is best to dress your child practically for each season. The child's clothing should be comfortable and easily manipulated when the child needs to use the bathroom.
Good communication between parents and teachers benefits your child. Teachers welcome information about students including: the child's attitude toward school as reflected by his/her remarks and incidents mentioned at home, significant out-of-school experiences, relationships with members of the family and playmates, unusual interests, activities, and hobbies.
There will be one formal parent/teacher conference scheduled mid-year. An open house is scheduled during the year to provide parents with the opportunity to see children in the school environment.
Notices providing information about class projects and other activities are posted on the bulletin boards outside each classroom. Teachers may also send home progress reports. Each teacher sends monthly newsletters home.
Field trips will be announced on the bulletin board. A parent or designated adult will provide transportation and supervision for each 3 and 4-year-old on field trips. Siblings of 4-year-olds are not permitted on field trips.
During the school year, a child may need special services for speech and other learning difficulties. For assessment and evaluation: 1. 2 year olds - free from Suffolk County 2. 3 & 4 year olds - free from your local school district The results of the assessment may show that your child may need special services. Services may be provided here at St. Peter's Nursery Preschool. The county or school district would provide a speech teacher or Special Education Itinerant (SEIT) to help the child with learning difficulties within the classroom setting.
For more information, please contact the nursery preschool office at: (631) 423-9523
St. Peter's Nursery Preschool reserves the right to dismiss any child if the child is unable to participate in the class experiences or if tuition and fees have not been paid.
